Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to analyse and to interpret the evolution of training courses for teaching staff at the University of Burgos over the period 2000/01-2010/11, with a view to identifying different indicators that will help to guide future training programmes, both within and outside our University. This study, of a descriptive nature, applies a mixed approach and a two-stage design. In the first place, the data from the reports on training actions by academic year were analysed, as well as the databases in digital format provided by the Instituto de Formación e Inovación Educativa (IFIE) [Institute of Educational Training and Innovation] of the University of Burgos. Subsequently, a case study of teachers with high levels of participation in training actions was independently conducted to supplement the quantitative results, which investigated their perceptions of the degree of effectiveness and the implementation of the training during their teaching practice. After conducting these in-depth interviews, discussion groups were organised with the students of each teacher in the interviews to gather further information. The results show a clear tendency to increase the number of training actions (courses, seminars, workshops, study days, etc.) programmed by the University during the established period as well as increasing concern among university teaching staff over their training. Nevertheless, further work has to continue in the present-day context towards the consolidation of a coherent training programme within the framework of actions at a national level.
