Resumo

The jurisdiction of the Corregimiento de Castilla Vieja encompassed, since the middle of the sixteenth century seven Merindades in the north of the present province of Burgos. Several villas belonging to the Merindad de Cuesta Urria and others near Medina de Pomar were located in the Fuero de Vizcaya, without any legal titles legitimizing such a privileged situation. The reasons, among other reasons, to exempt themselves from the distribution of taxes as well as the enlistment of soldiers, because they are places to be accommodated to the Fuero de Vizcaya. The legal and unique personality of these territories influenced their own internal organization, as the councils of the imprisoned places defended the law and customs that affected their prerogatives and freedoms. This research paper attempts to decipher the keys of this capacity, link the territorial and political formation of the Lordship of Biscay with the General Meeting of the Merindades of Castilla Vieja and with the Junta de Avellaneda from the information of the Cadastre de Ensenada and the Dictionary of Tomás López, both of the 18th century
