Resum

Music has traditionally been a frame for communicating and preserving emotions, news and events. There are many exam- ples of this kind in mediaeval chronicles, ballads and couplets. It is well known that music helps to remember texts more easily and with this purpose has been used in traditional education. However, since music became a consumers’ good, the role of traditional music has been broken and people stopped singing. We think it is possible to recover this role of music as a learning tool in the classroom to motivate and facilitate remembering and linking knowledge and emotions. We propose as a learning and dissemination activity composing lyrics with geological background using popular melodies, such as the couplet (commonly used in the carnival of Cadiz). This is a useful exercise both for the receiver and the composer. Most difficulties come from: 1) shyness and self-restraining, 2) finding adequate and easy-to-repeat tunes, 3) finding rhymes for scientific terms. Here we propose examples that overcome these drawbacks. The structure of the sections is eight-syllable verses that can be adapted to ballads or couplets. Lyrics can cover a wide range of issues, from field trips to specific subjects (where songs can be very long). To find a good refrain is always a major challenge. This transversal initiative aims to help the teaching of science, adding additional motivation, facilitating memorization and, above all, recovering the folk music, so efficient and rich in the transmission of oral tradition in the past.
