Resum

Several thousands of fossil remains from a human species, named Homo heidelbergensis, have been recovered from the Sima de los Huesos site in Atapuerca. An almost complete pelvis and part of the trunk of an aged human individual that lived around half a million years ago are part of this fossil sample. This individual suff ered from locomotive impairments to some extent. Th ese fossils are the most ancient evidence to date of the body of an advanced age human individual with evident signs of aging and impairment. The survival of this handicapped individual could be indicative of the social care given to the elderly in the distant past.
