Abstract

We present the preliminary results of a paleomagnetic study, in Mesozoic sediments of the Midelt-Errachidia transect in the Moroccan High Atlas. The Natural Remanent Magnetization is dominated by a remagnetization with a very stable behavior and systematic normal polarity, previously observed in a westward region of the Central High Atlas. Using the small circle intersection method we have calculated the direction of this secondary magnetization (D = 336.7°, I = 30.6°). Comparing this direction with the Global Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) in African coordinates for Northern Africa we can assign a Cenomanian age (about 100 M.a.) to this remagnetization, similar to that obtained in other regions of the Central High Atlas. This work enhances the hypothesis that there is a widespread remagnetization in the Moroccan High Atlas.
