Abstract

Phenomenological, qualitative and descriptive research of cultural factors that hinder the management of small isolated rural schools. The information was collected, first, with in-depth interviews of a selective sample of teachers in western Patagonia, as a critical environment, then spread to other actors and locations, and finally included bibliographical evidence. The results allow identify teaching in rural communities not ethnically differentiated, ie. white and mestizo populations, as a case of invisible multiculturalism, condition associated with problems both the management and the achievements of these schools. The study culminates with the development of a theoric device, a Weberian ideal type, comprised for seven dimensions that characterize central features of the culture of traditional communities settled in these rural territories.
