Abstract

Objective: To check that PKU children get significantly higher results than the control group of children for ADHD indicators. Methodology: the research includes a descriptive and quantitative approach. Interview tools were used as well as Conners Questionnaire (parents and teachers) in a sample of eight phenylketonuric children from Extremadura, who represents the total population of PKU children aged 8-13, taking into account the exclusion criteria, and eight children from Extremadura aged similarly as control group. Results: After analyzing the data obtained with the statistical software SPSS 17.0 we have found that PKU children have overall higher scores for both questionnaires. Once completed the inferential analysis, we can see that the parent's questionnaire results, although higher for PKU children, do not show significant differences comparing them to the control group's ones. However, in teacher's questionnaire, significant differences can be found between both groups, being PKU children more likely to have ADHD. Conclusions: we can state that differences have been found between both groups regarding the obtained score from the collected data in both questionnaires, where we perceive the PKU group as more likely to have typical ADHD symptoms in its subtypes.
