Resumo

This doctoral dissertation comprises three chapters that collectively examine the internationalization strategy of Spanish Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), paying special attention to the proactive use of political risk when selecting the location where they want to be present. The first chapter studies the relationships between political risk and scope of internationalization and finds evidence of the fact that firms only partially follow the Uppsala model and that their internationalization strategy is strongly influenced by their political capabilities. The second one focuses on the determinants of investment on Eastern Europe countries, new members of the European Union. Finally, the third chapter analyzes foreign direct investment flows from Southern European economies to developing regions.
