Resumo

The aim of this work is the analysis of the Earth's magnetic field variation by studying the paleomagnetic directions and paleointensities recorded in three Plio-Pleistocene lava flow sequences (Djavakheti Highland, Georgia). The absolute paleointensity determination is a complex process and the reliability of the results is still controversial. Therefore, different experimental techniques and procedures for the treatment of results have been used, with the aim of obtaining high quality paleointensities. Paleointensity values yield approximately half of the current field, which can be interpreted as a result of a weak time-averaged field or a period characterized by an anomalous field behavior. The sequences have been interpreted as records of different field behaviors: anomalous regime period that comprises a complete reversal polarity, including the moments before and after the directional change; stable regime period and anomalous regime period during a transitional moment in which the direction of the field is being reversed.
