Résumé

This study aims to identify variables that influence the high failure rates in the introductory courses of Faculties of Science and Engineering Schools. In particular, the objectives of the study are: To assess the physics knowledge of students entering the university, and to study the predictive validity of an assessment instrument designed in this project as well as the official entrance test at the university, as compared to the performance of students in first year courses. Six hundred and sixty three students from two Spanish universities participated in the study. The results of the study show students' deficiencies in scientific skills. Also, a low predictive validity of both tests was found. Consequently, the explanation for successes or failures in first year physics courses is to be found in different variables than the initial knowledge of students.
