Résumé

This article tales an in-depth look at some points prior to the decision to implement a knowledge management system at an organisation. It starts by reflecting on companies as co-operative relationships between individuals with knowledge and, for the most part, distant goals. This sets the framework for the rest of the article. If a person's worth is in what they know, organisations should be interested first and foremost in the intellectual dimension of their members, as this, among other things, enables them to access the broad and varied set of knowledge required to fulfil the tasks undertaken. To solve some of the problems which arise, the design and implementation is suggested of a system of incentives to prevent opportunist behaviour, and co-ordination mechanisms which enable the necessary knowledge to be accessed and shared. The specific measures chosen from the wide range of possibilities which exists will depend on the individual characteristics and circumstances of each organisation, though this article does propose guidelines for scholars and practitioners at organisations themselves.
