Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative-descriptive work was to identify the operating invariants in the schemes activated by students during the theoretical application of the hydrolysis concept to peptide substances. Different situations (S) were used as referents; the data was collected from representational linguistic sources (L) used as significants, so as to identify the meaning (I) of the hydrolysis concept. The sample was formed by 17 teacher trainees in the areas of Biology and Chemistry of a biochemistry course in the “Instituto Pedagógico de Caracas (IPC)”. Two representational categories, A and B, were first identified; afterwards B was maintained and two new categories, C and D, appeared; all the categories were related to non enzymatic hydrolysis. Only two students were found in the scientifically adequate D category. The results will be useful for adidactic intervention to allow a meaningful conceptual development of the peptide hydrolysis concept considering the D category.
