Abstract

This article wants to be a balance about republicanism in Asturias during the XIXth century; however, it also tries to insist on those questions that can enrich the general knowledge of spanish republicanism history. In 1868, after a long time of formation, there was a republican emergence in many asturian councils. After some readjustments of people and doctrine, in the 80's the diversity of republicans became more definite. Meanwhile, a few revolts were planned, but the first Republican Union of history could be created. The foundation of several newspapers was the main way that asturian republicans used to spread their doctrine, but sociability practices played a crucial role too. Most of the supporters of asturian republicanism were craftsmen or working class, but some bourgeois may also be included and, off course, a lot of professionals and other members of middle-class.
