Abstract

During the last decades there has been an increasing interest in the analysis of managers' influence on organizational behaviour. Research, mainly focused on private firms, has anal yzed the influence of managers' demographic characteristics but has largely ignored the role of managers' emotions. Our study complements this line of research by analyzing their affective traits. Results for a sample of public managers in the Basque Government show the influence of their affective traits and other demographic characteristics on budget exe cution. Consistent with our hypothesis, managers' positive affective traits are positively related to a higher deviation (positive and negative) in the budget execution compared with the budget allocated. Negative affective traits do not show a significant relationship. The level of formal education in Law is also positively related to a higher deviation in th e budget execution.
