Abstract

The Peninsula War led to countless atrocities and violent episodes committed by all the parties involved. Local documentary sources detail some interesting cases of the violent responses of local defence forces (partidas) to the presence and acts of deserters from the Napoleonic armies, generally belonging to the different nationalities incorporated into Empire. Such unedifying episodes, justified in the context of a supposedly revolutionary and patriotic war, force us to question the myth of the local partisans as romantic figures.
