Abstract

The Becerro Galicano is a late twelfth-century cartulary from the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, in the Rioja región of northern Spain, and is one of the most important sources for the rural, social, economic and political history of the region. A newly launched digital edition of the Becerro, which incorporates a range of analytical tools and search engines, now allows us to interrogate this source in ways which had previously been impossible. In this paper we use these new tools to explore the language used in the Becerro relating to violence, and thence to the role of violence itself in medieval society.
