Resumo

Geoarchaeological studies in the Arlanpe cave included mineralogical, grain size and micromorphological analysis. Site formation processes were investigated and archaeological data supplemented. Sediments derived from soil erosion and infiltration formed the sedimentary record, sedimentological characteristics of those sediments allow identifying relatively humid and warm palaeoenvironmental conditions throughout the Early Middle Palaeolithic, occasionally interrupted by short cold events. Cooler conditions were detected along the Upper Palaeolithic sequence. Micromorphology shows that human presence during the Early Middle Palaeolithic alternates with the presence of carnivores; abundant phosphate sediments denote the presence of carnivores and human occupations would be witnessed by the presence of microcharcoal fragments derived from dismantled hearths.
