La presencia femenina en el arte mueble paleolítico de la península ibérica

Abstract

During the Upper Paleolithic, Iberian Peninsula is not known for being a center of production of feminine representations of round shape, the typical "venus" type. Although this type of representations are practically absent in the Palaeolithic art of the Iberian Peninsula, the findings of various plates, engravings, figurines, etc., in Magdalenian period, can show the role of women in different stages of the Upper Palaeolithic period. In spite of the different interpretations, the symbolic function of these representations acquires the importance that opens an interesting debate about the role of women in Prehistory. Thus, the associated symbolism raises important research paths in relation to ritual and abstract thinking during this period.
