Abstract

Hydrogen has been proposed as a sustainable and clean energy carrier. However, materials in contact with it are degraded, which is a major limitation in hydrogen storage technologies. Specifically, gaseous storage under high pressures in metallic vessels requires a better understanding of the phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement. Selection of alloys and prognosis of their integrity and durability is made using two tools: numerical simulation and experimental verification. The former requires obtaining the constitutive equations to be implemented in finite element programs. These equations describe the evolution of the metal-hydrogen system so they are based on physical concepts at different scales. Finally, a result validation by laboratory tests will be necessary.
