Résumé
This article consists of a review of the state of the art of using bryophytes in construction, especially as part of buildings envelopes. Bryophytes have traditionally been used in vernacular architecture of extreme climates, but always related to a secondary role. Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in studying the potential of bryophytes as a component of building envelopes, in the current context of a “green” consciousness-raising in the construction sector. Bryophytes are suitable as substitutes for vascular plants in green façade and roof systems, taking advantage of some of their general characteristics, such as their ability to colonize different bio-receptive construction materials, photosynthetic activity, tolerance to adverse factors, reviviscence ability and high water retention capacity. Nevertheless, the commercial systems developed with this aim have not reached the expected results yet, and thus their use is not being successful. The causes of this problem are analysed and new methods are proposed to achieve the mentioned aims
