Most of the foundlings housed in Spanish hospices were nourished by wet-nurses from rural environments, and the salary they received proved an important complement to the ever precarious rural family economies. Despite reforms introduced by Liberal governments, the difficult conditions of these women, overwhelmingly from impoverished backgrounds, barely improved with respect to the eighteenth century. Moreover, the different aspects of their work were supervised at every stage by men: administrators and bureaucrats controlled their access to the job; priests and mayors fiscalised their morality and commitment; while their husbands administered the meagre wages paid for such necessary work.
