Resumo
When human remains appear in a site, the first thing the archaeologist or palaeontologist considers is to find out what type of bones they are. Later, in the laboratory, further analysis of the remains can let us know if they belonged to a woman or a man, also the height of this person, and we can deduce if he/she suffered from an illness which left us some clues in the skeletal remains. Not all bones give the same type of information, so in order to know which data we can extract from each bone it is crucial to learn something more about our ancestors. This educational activity tries to convey to students all the information we can obtain from the study of human fossils, using existing osteological collections. Students will become familiar with the deductive hypothetical method, using the same tools and basic procedures developed in the field of Human Palaeontology.
