Abstract

The Research Project conducted in the Pleistocene sites of Sierra de Atapuerca began in 1978, directed by Emiliano Aguirre. From the 90s, the Regional Government (Junta de Castilla y León (JCyL) developed a program of infrastructures aimed at protecting the site and enable general public visits. In parallel, the Atapuerca Reseach Team began a disseminative strategy in order to publish the investigations’ results. Thanks to both initiatives, Atapuerca constitutes nowadays an international model, being pioneer on joining scientific dissemination and cultural tourism. Within the infrastructures made by JCyL, it should be remarked the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH) in Burgos, inaugurated in 2010, a multidisciplinary centre, in which dissemination and didactics are priority objectives. At the same time, the Museum, understood as head of the Sistema Atapuerca, Cultura de la Evolución, joins cultural, social and economic aims in a Cultural Space, in base on two exceptional heritage axes: the MEH, cultural and disseminative space tackling the origin and evolution of our species, and the Sierra of Atapuerca, unique scientific territory due to its outstanding archaeological and paleontological discoveries.
