Abstract
Flow cytometry was used to determine ploidy levels of Tagetes progenies obtained from crosses within and among populations of T. erecta , T. patula , two ecotypes of T. tenuifolia , and two unidentified wild populations. Progenies obtained from within population crosses showed the expected ploidy levels of 2x and 4x, corresponding to DNA average indexes of 0.48 and 1.00, respectively. Progenies from crosses between diploid populations and a tetraploid male had a DNA average index of 0.72 indicating a 3x ploidy level. Most progenies from crosses between diploid populations were diploids, but crosses between diploid and tetraploid populations showed triploid progenies and other unexpected ploidies suggesting the possible occurrence of unreduced gametes, apomixis, haploidy, and chimerism phenomena.
