Abstract

Statistics teaching for health area suffers from students prone to statistical anxiety, little use of learning theories and lack of quantitative analysis instruments and techniques to establish their level of learning. This research proposed a methodology based on Problem Based Learning, supported by the Theory of Conceptual Fields in order to assess the extent to which the conceptual field of Hypothesis Testing for the Population Average was established after its application to students at an university in southern Brazil and compared the results with others that tried traditional teaching. The research methodology used the triangulation of qualitative and quantitative approaches. The teaching methodology proved to be feasible even in a traditional teaching context. There were not significantly less results compared to the traditional, with the gain of participation and purposeful activity of students during classes and group work.
