Abstract
This work aims to study the natural wearing of the rails when it comes from the sliding effect of the wheels running on the rail surface. It also studies the influence of the applied high dynamic loads on the microstructure of the rail steel properties. The experimental part analyses real samples obtained from rails removed from the track and some other samples to which a forced wearing has been induced in the laboratory. All experimental data have been validated according to the Archard model of wearing, with satisfactory results. This investigation can be applied on the planning of the maintenance works for the rail, with focus on the optimization of preventive grinding intervals.
