Abstract

Franco’s intentional manipulation of hundreds of International Brigade prisoners confined in concentration camps until 1939 was focussed above all on the whitewashing of his regime’s image abroad. Alongside the Propaganda Service’s use of the prisoners in films and labelling photographs of them with offensive terms, we observe Dr. Vallejo-Nájera’s pseudo-scientific experiments on those he regarded as bearers of a ‘red gene’ that was to be eliminated. The ‘stars’ of these propaganda films were systematically stripped of all dignity in order to be re-educated and even re-evangelised in the ideology of the New Spain.
