Abstract

This Doctoral Thesis addresses from a historiographical perspective how the Sierra de Atapuerca has witnessed its historical evolution since its first documentary references in the 10th century, until the arrival of the first scientists who were interested in its Archaeology, its Botany, its Geology or its Palaeontology during the first third of the 20th century. This historiographic analysis aims to understand the role of the Sierra de Atapuerca in the genesis, construction and consolidation of Prehistoric Archaeology as a scientific discipline in the province of Burgos. Furthermore, this work has recovered all those news and articles that have allowed us to build a comprehensive reading of this territory. This aspect has made it possible to explore how the beginnings of cultural tourism occurred in Burgos, since the end of the 19th century, as well as the role that the Cueva de Atapuerca played in this birth.
