Abstract

Purpose of the study: The authors present an unusual complication that arose after the injection of hyaluronic acid in an ankle. Material and methods: 37 year old male patient diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis in the right ankle and skin necrosis in the distal third of the leg, secondary to extravasation of hyaluronic acid. Results: Excellent outcome to the conservative treatment applied. Conclusions: Intra-articular infiltrations require strict asepsia and techniques, correct drug dosage and the relative rest of the joint in the first 48 hours, in order to avoid rare complications such as extravasation. The appearance of this complication must be suspected in order to provide quick and appropriate treatment.
