Abstract

16 dacitic and rhyolitic lavas of Paleogene and Cretaceous age were sampled near the town of Bolnisi, in southern Georgia. This study was directed towards two aims: (i) Obtaining new paleomagnetic results for the Caucasus region and (ii) providing new paleointensity data for two periods, Cretaceous and Paleogene, in which data are still scarce. Paleomagnetic results show that characteristic remanence in part of the outcrops is characterised by a direction close to the expected one for 60 and 80 Ma. However, several lavas display deviated paleodeclinations which could be related to clockwise rotations. In two cases the observed rotations yield values near 90. Rock-magnetic and paleomagnetic experiments allowed selecting 65 samples belonging to 9 lavas to conduct paleointensity determinations. They are being carried out with the IZZI method and have not yet been concluded.
