Abstract

The Jurassic limestones of the Central High Atlas are intruded by Upper Jurassic dykes and plutonic bodies. The limestone host rocks have undergone a widespread and pervasive normal polarity remagnetization carried by magnetite which has been dated as 100 Ma. In order to study the magnetic mineralogical changes due to the thermal impact of a dike in the remagnetized limestones, a detailed rock magnetic and paleomagnetic study has been performed in these dikes. A clear signal of pyrrhotite has been observed by different rock-magnetic analysis in the 1-2 meters of host-rocks closest to the dike. The NRM also shows a pyrrhotite paleomagnetic component with reversed polarity coexisting with the remagnetization carried by magnetite. A gradient of pyrrhotite content has been observed in the host-rock indicating a thermal control on pyrrhotite development. A discussion about the thermal effect on the chemical transformation involving magnetite and pyrrhotite in sedimentary rocks is presented.
