The transition between extensional and compressional-driven magnetic fabrics in sedimentary rocks is explored in this example of the Basque-Cantabrian basin. In areas where extensional structures are abundant and no superimposed deformation can be observed (both at the micro- and macrostructural scale), the magnetic fabric can be interpreted as extensional. Compressional tectonic fabrics are unequivocally interpreted in areas of cleavage development. In the areas located in-between, although no macroscopic evidence of compression exists, the magnetic fabric is a sensitive marker of deformation. In this transitional zone, a section of 6 km long has been studied by means of magnetic fabrics, establishing that where there are extensional structures present, the direction of the petrofabric is different from the extensional direction and it appears to be modified by the compression related to the buttressing of the synrift sequence against the northern limiting fault od the basin.
