Abstract

Detritic deposits with siliceous cement located at the SW and W of the Duero basin (Areniscas de Salamanca Formation) have been considered Cenozoic and more recently they have been ascribed to the Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene. In order to provide new data about their controversial age, a paleomagnetic study on two of the most representative outcrops of this formation (Valorio, near Zamora city and Calvarrasa de Arriba, Salamanca) has been carried out. The paleomagnetic analysis has allowed to isolate a stable paleomagnetic component carried by hematite showing normal and reversed polarities. A discussion about the possible dating of the Areniscas de Salamanca Formation as Lower Cretaceous in age on the basis of these new paleomagnetic results is presented.
