Abstract

Preliminary palaeomagnetic and rock-magnetic results obtained in two cores extracted from the lacustrine sequence that infills the Camp dels Ninots maar (Caldes de Malavella, Girona, NE Spain) are presented here. The particular sedimentary conditions of the site have allowed an excellent preservation of the spectacular Pliocene fossils recovered. These are represented by macro and microvertebrates –generally in anatomical connection-, including rodents, turtles, amphibians and fishes, among others remains. This palaeoentological record suggest a Pliocene age for the site (3.5 – 3.2 M.a.). Several magnetozones of different polarities but similar magnetic properties (coexisting magnetite and greigite) have been identified which we preliminarily attribute to the record of Kaena and/or Mamooth subchrons within the Gauss normal polarity Chron.
