Resum

Manganese stromatolites have been recently discovered in El Soplao cave (Cantabria, Spain). These rocks are unique since it was previously unknown that they could form in the dark region of caves. We have studied the magnetic properties, which are dominated by the paramagnetic fraction. However the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) contains a very stable component carried by magnetite, showing normal and reversed polarities. The reversed polarities dominate. These results indicate that the minimum age of the El Soplao stromatolites is older than the Brunhes/Matuyama polarity transition (~780.000 años).
