Abstract
In 1606 fray Luis de la Vega published one of the most famous hagio¬graphies of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. In it was written for the first time that this saint had died at the age of ninety, in 1019. The intention of the author was to devoutly rescue the figure and attribute to him an unusual longevity as a sign of Christian virtue, however, the subsequent hagiographs gave truthfulness to the fact. This article analyzes the origin and roots of a tradition that is still repeated despite its lack of historical foundation, and which led in 2019 to the celebration of the millennium of the birth of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
