Abstract

This paper presents the paradigm of universal design for leaming as a valid address cultural diversity in classrooms teaching methodology XXI century. This approach allows the design ofthe curriculum from an optic which diversity is the reality ofthe classroom, not the difference skews. During the next pages, the authors present the evolution of the concept of universal design, its adaptation to the leaming environment, the benefits that this model provides for multiculturalism and empirical evidence supporting its use in elementary education classrooms. The authors conclude that this concept should be studied more in depth, as it is proving to be a valid methodology to promote leaming for all students, and especially those who are at risk of exclusion. In addition, the authors also expose the need to revise education policies to include this paradigm, as is taking place in other Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world.
