El sueño americano de Sansón Carrasco según Andrés Trapiello

Abstract

One of the literary works more inclined to a continuous study and revision is Don Quijote of the Mancha, given that the novel of Miguel de Cervantes could well have been a theoretical treatise on literature, due to the fact that we can find in it all the literary techniques that have been used subsequently. It is also an inexhaustible source for new novels, nevertheless from its pages have been extracted stories and characters that have continued their “lives” outside of Don Quixote. In the field of contemporary Spanish narrative, Andrés Trapiello (León, 1953) is the most prominent writer in the field of quixotic rewriting as he authored two of the most recent continuations of Cervantes’ work, Al morir don Quijote and El final de Sancho Panza y otras suertes. In this work we will examine the study of both works from the point of view of the textual relations inventoried by Gérard Genette (1982) and we will follow the characters from Cervantes’ novel in Trapiello’s works after Alonso Quijano died. We will verify that the one who takes the reins of these personages’ lives will not be Sancho, but the bachelor, Sansón Carrasco, and we will delve into the reason of the relevance acquired by this personage.
