Abstract

Saint Josemaría designed universities with the distinctive features of the millenary institution that, at the same time, promotes the core of the spirit of Opus Dei: the coherence of Christian life in work, in family and all the ordinary activities. This spirit implies unity with the magisterium of the Church, respect for the dignity of each person and their work, love for truth and freedom, openness to dialogue, responsibility and a spirit of service. The first university founded was that in Navarra in 1952. Seventy years later, there are 19 universities located in 15 countries and Business Schools in 20 cities. These are institutions open to all, in collaboration with national and international universities. It is analyzed how these ideas come to life in the case of the Universidad del Istmo in Guatemala.
