Resumen
A paleomagnetic, rock-magnetic and paleointensity study has been carried out on 16 flows from the Djavakheti Highland (Lesser Caucasus, Georgia). Measurement of magnetization versus temperature curves allowed distinguishing three types of thermomagnetic curves: (i) Reversible curves with magnetite as only carrier of remanence (type H); (ii) curves similar to the former, but irreversible (type H− ) and (iii) irreversible curves containing a low Curie-temperature phase and magnetite. Analysis of hysteresis curve parameters showed the presence of magnetic grains characterised by pseudo-single-domain structure, which might be interpreted in terms of a mixture of single-domain and multi-domain grains. Paleomagnetic experiments allowed determining characteristic components for all flows. A normal polarity was observed in 7 cases, a reversed polarity in 8 cases and an intermediate polarity in flow AP2. Paleointensity experiments with the Coe method were performed on 31 specimens from 12 flows. After application of selection criteria, only 16 samples from 5 flows were observed to provide reliable results, with mean values varying between 24.1 and 54.3 µT.
