Abstract

We present a full archaeomagnetic vector and rock-magnetic study carried out on two hearths excavated inthe medieval archaeological site of La Pudia (Burgos, Castilla y León, Spain). The main aim of this studyis to archaeologically date both hearths to know when the archaeological site was abandoned. The archaeomagnetic direction was analyzed through thermal and stepwise alternating field demagnetization. Meandirection of hearth 1 is declination = 19.8°; inclination = 56.5°; (N = 21; k = 391; α95 = 1.6°) and for hearth2 is declination = 20.5°; inclination = 52.6°; (N = 21; k = 763; α95 = 1.1°). Archaeointensity experimentswith the Thellier-Coe protocol, which included an anisotropy correction, were carried out on 48 samples. The anisotropy-corrected mean intensity values obtained are 53.7 ± 8.9 µT in hearth 1 and 53.9 ± 4.6 µTin hearth 2. The archaeomagnetic dating was carried out comparing the mean full-vector values obtainedfrom each hearth with the SCHA.DIF.14k geomagnetic model. Only one possible interval was obtained foreach hearth: 852 – 1063 AD (hearth 1) y 866 – 1048 AD (hearth 2), both at the 95% confidence level. Theseresults are archaeologically and historically coherent with the context of the archaeological site, indicatingthat the site’s abandonment occurred during the 11th century AD.
