Abstract

The rigorousness of the wind sector subject their designs to certification following the criteria of specific guides which, referring to international materials standards, take into account the particularities of the turbines. In these guides and standards, some of the requirements for cast materials are not completely defined or should be interpreted, which makes it difficult to optimise their performance. This thesis reviews the criteria for the use of cast materials used in the wind energy sector and integrates the mechanical property prediction from process simulation into the structural calculation. The thesis presents three technical articles published in the journal of the American Foundry Association and expands on certain aspects of residual stress and fracture mechanics that were not explicitly covered in the published articles.
