Abstract

The province of Logroño, born in the Liberal Triennium, extended its limits to the east to the Alhama river, which included the Rioja baja. Among its main antecedents are the delimitations made by Fray Mateo de Anguiano in 1701, and by the geographer Tomás López de Vargas in 1769. But the definitive step would be taken by the Real Sociedad Económica Riojana, which created the district of Calahorra in 1801, incorporating into the institution a large territory that covered a good part of the easter Rioja. These milestones led to the full inclusion of the calagurritan lands in the new province that began to be designed in 1820, and which would see the process of provincial creation concluded on January 27, 1822.
