Abstract

The casual finds of two Bronze Age flat axes recovered at Tordesillas, in Valladolid, and Cuéllar, in Segovia, are reported here. Their typology and composition –both were made with actual bronze or copper alloys, with a content of c. 5 % tin, as revealed by X-Ray Fluorescence– are closely related to those of the Cogotas I cultural group. Pb isotopic analyses indicate the non-local provenance of the metals, as expected considering the absence of copper mineral deposits in the sedimentary soils of the Middle Duero basin. The Cuéllar axe comes from El Milagro mine, in Asturias, and the composition of the Molinillo piece is compatible with the ore deposits of Linares, in Jaén, and of the Sierra de la Demanda, in Burgos These results are illustrative of long-distance interaction, and support the idea of the Bronze Age as the Age of the travellers.
