Abstract

The existence of aquaculture during Roman predominance is quite evident in archaeological and literary sources, but is almost unknown from the legal point of view. In this study, some legal questions are presented in relation to the cultivation of fish and molluscs. Thus, for example, in the case of purchase, the fish pond, though not its contents, formed part of the estate. The analysis also covers the assimilation of fish cultivated in ponds with other domestic animals; and the differences derived from the public or the private environment where these activities were carried out, their protection through interdicts and even the possible taxation of these exploitations.
