Abstract

The life model set by contemporary society evidences habits that are not good for our health. The aim of this research was to execute a study of nutrition in the school environment, examining the main didactic programs carried out from 1950 to the present day. We have tried to find out whether the different studies that have been utilized over the years have influenced the healthy habits of the students. Throught this research, a methodology based on the historical-educational method has been used, studying the documents related to the appropiate periods. Our results have shown that there are a number of national and international organizations involved in researching the issue of nutrition in the different educational stages. Thanks to them, it has been posible to elaborate a multitude of programs which have subsequently been developed in pedagogical institutions. They were afterwards translated into several languages. The results conclude that there is a great concern by government entities in enacting a healthy and balanced diet among the most of the school aged children and growing youth population in order to avoid serious diseases in adulthood. We are speaking about disorders such as obesity, osteoporosis, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, anorexia, bulimia, oral and dental problems, cancer o coronary heart disease. FIVE A DAY & THAO educational programs have been stand out in schools around the world due to the wide diversity of professionals engaged in their publications in textbooks. The three studies carried out in this PhD thesis on school textbooks from the most prestigious publishers on the market reveal that there is still a long way to go and that further research is needed in this area.
