Abstract

This paper analyzes how Don Juan de España is an attempt to set on stage the image of a new national project, shaped on the archetypes of patriotic regeneration of the early twentieth century, through a new hermeneutics of traditional myths (Don Juan and also Don Quixote). The playwright María Martínez Sierra shows her support from the stage to the new project of the so-called Generation of 14, «the first that has never negotiated with the topics of patriotism», according to Ortega. The dramatic language—characters, topics and resources with which the tragicomedy subverts traditional-symbolic values—redirects the Don Juan myth into a new identity discourse of Spain in the early decades of the last century
