Achieving sustainable development has become the main political priority. The food industry sector plays a key role in this transition towards sustainability, insofar as, although it produces essential products (food), it does so at the expense of a significant environmental impact. For this purpose, European regulations have begun to oblige companies to report on their environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance. This paper analyzes this new scenario, detailing the strategic changes that Spanish food firms must address to maintain their legitimacy to operate in the markets.
