Abstract

The research presented addresses the elucidation of the relationship between religion and psychopathology. The issue was launched by Freud who argued that religion is based on pathological psychic processes. The investigation of this problem lies in an interdisciplinary area of confluence between the Psychology of Religion, Psychoanalysis as a theory of mental life and Psychopathology. The theoretical research methodology used for the clarification of possible intrinsic relations between mental processes put into play in the experiences and religious behavior and psychopathology was as follows: 1. Clarify the position of Freud from the analysis of the main texts of his work that focuses on religion 2 . Analyze the texts of authors most representative of the mainstream post- Freudian psychoanalysis investigating religion in terms of its psychological origins 3. Analysis of papers published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis between 1920 and 2012, a total of 32 articles studying the different stages of positioning on the topic studied We conclude that Freud's position on the psychological roots of religion is not uniform , that after an initial phase of development of Freud's positions, from the fifties begins a period in which various authors, important for the progress of psychoanalytic theory, reveal not pathological psychic processes and even protectors of mental health, implicated in the origin of religion. It is beginning to draw up the last three decades a more objective, neither unprejudiced nor apologetic reviewed, highlighting the similarities but also the differences between these two fields of human reality.
