Abstract

In this thesis, the possibility of reusing slate waste as an aggregate in the fabrication of cement mortars is studied. By doing so, the aim is to contribute to a new approach to the exploitation of these waste products. The industrial landscapes around slate mines are highly degraded by the proliferation of slag heaps, in which hundreds of tons of slate waste accumulate. The exploitation of these materials provides a two-fold benefit: on the one hand, the areas surrounding the mining zone are reconstituted and, on the other, a material formerly considered of no use is rendered profitable. The general introduction sets out a description of the present-day state of slate production and the generation of slate waste in Spain, as well as a review of the main activities involving its recycling and reuse.
